OLABISI ONABANJO UNIVERSITY (formerly Ogun State University ) was established
on 7 th July, 1982 through the efforts of the then civilian governor of Ogun State
, Chief (Dr.) Olabisi Onabanjo. As a mark of honour to the great citizen of the
State, the name of the University was changed from Ogun State University to OLABISI
ONABANJO UNIVERSITY on May 29, 2001 . The legal basis of the University is the
Ogun State University Edict No. 2of 1987.
The University opened its door to the first set of students (500) on 31 st
January, 1983 when the first set of provisional admission into faculties of
Arts, the Social and Management Sciences, Natural Sciences (including first
year Medicine and Agriculture) and Education were published in November, 1982.
Since its inception, OLABISI ONABANJO UNIVERSITY had had the privilege of ranking
among the best Universities in Nigeria . Many Nigerians could still believe
that this unique University is a State University . The reason for this misconception
is not far fetched; the products of the University are known to be better products
than many of our Universities with the arrays of financial supports opened to
them.
The University has, since its inception in 1982, offered admission to over
50,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The total output of graduates
was 10,291 while postgraduate output was 1697.
The institution has had four Chief Executives since inception: Late Prof. John
Olubi Sodipo, November 1982 - December 1990; Prof. T. O. Bamkole, January 1991
- March 1995; Prof. O Y. Oyeneye, April 1995 - November 1999; Prof. Layi Ogunkoya,
November 1999 - March 2001 and Prof. Afolabi Soyode, April 2001 till date.
